Experts on multiple subjects discussing the matter of meridians


Recently, experts and scholars from different parts of China discussed matters of Chinese medical meridians at the sixth multiple salon of TCM at research department of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

The lacking of exchanges blocked the development of meridian research
Prof. Zhang Weibo from China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences pointed out that the meridian research within China is still at low ebb. The meridian research has caused great attention and experts from U.S., Korea and Germany have published meridian research papers in international journals. Zhang Weibo considered that the lacking of exchanges between experts on different subjects is a key element that blocks the development of meridian research.

Meridian research needs integration
Prof.  Xie Haoran from He Bei Medical University thought that the matters of meridians should be solved by Chinese people and the lacking of standard for meridian substance is an important cause for no uniform understanding.

Prof. Chang Xilang from Information and communication engineering college in Zhong Bei University expatiated the nature of channel of meridians from the aspect of information. He said that the understanding of the traditional form of meridians has a serious limitation of methodology. The morphologic research in the past didn’t give quantitative analysis in various nerves, blood vessels, lymph, clearances and apertures and the understanding of single channel structure (nerves, blood vessels, apertures, etc.) transferring life message is incomplete. He held that the structure of meridian channel mainly obeys the law of systematic statistical distribution rather than single specific entities.

Prof. Zeng Xianzhao from communication engineering college in Beijing University of Science and Technology considered that meridian system is a biological net mode abstracted from observing complicated human body system in the opinion of net. The acupuncture points are the net nodes, whose therapeutic functions vary and relate with each other. Puncturing different acupuncture points according to different diseases is a dynamic course of utilizing physic and chemic method to produce and diffuse stimulation.

Prof. Zhou Lihua from Henan Chinese Medicine College raised the hypothesis of “meridian-protein coupling” and considered that protein is the key for acupuncture effect. He used the method of the subcutaneous protein differentiation between sequential meridian location and non-meridian location to search for specific protein and found out a specific electrophoresis band at the sequential meridian location at the early phase of his experiment. Some experts thought that there might exist individual correspondence between meridians and chromosome; in addition, specific meridians might relate to nerve fibers with different neurotransmitters.

Many experts thought that the related departments should reset a project for meridian research as soon as possible to solve the core problem of the theory of Chinese medicine soon and promote the development of Chinese meridian research.

Meridian exercise enjoys broad
Prof. Zhu Zongrang from Beijing Yanhuang meridian center introduced the usage of 312 kinds of meridian exercise, especially that popularized in foreign countries. Practice showed that meridian exercise has an obvious effect to high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
The present experts reached a consensus to a degree on fascial space-connective tissue as an important composing part of meridian substance. Meantime, most experts held that only research on meridian structure is not enough and structure, function and needling effect should be combined together to study. They also discussed other problems of meridian research.
