Forum on Development of International Standardization of Single-use Sterile Acupuncture Needle Held in Korea
The forum on development of international standardization of single-use sterile acupuncture needle was held in Taejon, Korea on June 12th and 13th, 2007. Ten specialists from Korea, China, Japan, Australia and Vietnam, Cui Shengxun, the traditional medical official in charge of the western pacific region (WPRO) of WHO, Tan Yuansheng, the Director of the office of standardization committee from WFAS attended this meeting. In addition, nine Korean manufactories of acupuncture needle appointed observers to participate in the meeting. Li Hengzhu, the Director of the Research Institution of Korean Medicine delivered the opening speech.
This forum discussed on the procedure of establishing the international standard of single-use sterile acupuncture needle according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO). All of the participants agreed on the necessity of establishing the standard, discussed and revised the international standard of single-use sterile acupuncture needle drafted by Korea. However, the participants considered that further discussion was necessary for establishing the international standard, and they would bring the discussed draft back to their own countries to consult with relevant authorities.
Background of the meeting:
1 Up to now, only China and Japan have national standard of acupuncture needle in the world.
2 China issued the first national standard of acupuncture needle in 1980. After 4 revisions, the present standard was the revised edition GB/T2024-1994 issued in 1994.
3 Japan published its first national standard of acupuncture needle in 2005.
4 Korea has been establishing the national standard of single-use sterile acupuncture needle since 2006. Meanwhile, it also hopes to establish international standard (ISO standard) during the process of establishing its own national standard.
