The state 973 project---“The definition of brain function by meridian specificity”initiated
Recently,“The definition of brain function by meridian specificity”---the state chief basic research and development plan project (973 project) undertaken by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine was initiated at the campus of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
“The definition of brain function by meridian specificity”, the project led by Prof. Lai Xinsheng from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, is the basic theory research in acupuncture field, aiming to clarify the substantial differences of meridian and non-meridian. Using modern technological research method---brain function imaging technique, including positron emission computerized tomography (PET), single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and wave spectrum analysis (MRS), with the blood flow, metabolism and functional activity of different brain areas as the index, this project will study the changes of the brain function under physiological and pathological condition with needling and sham-needling on meridian and non-meridian. It is expected to prove the assumption of “meridian specificity and brain are connected” raised by Prof. Lai Xinsheng in advance, complete the establishment of “the modeling of the definition of brain function by meridian specificity”, and define meridian and non-meridian from the angle of brain function imaging. The initiation of this project will actively promote the research of the specificity of meridians and acupoints.
